Today’s smartphones offer incredible versatility. With their increasingly powerful processors, they have notably taken over video games. Some models excel in this field, here is our selection of the best gamer smartphones.

Top 3 Gaming smartphones

Today’s smartphones are capable of great things that were unimaginable just a few years ago. The days of Snake’s success on the famous Nokia phones are over. The number of games, both free and paid, available without application stores is uncountable. If a good majority of them can be played on entry to mid-range devices, this is not the case with some recent titles like Genshin Impact which require a powerful equipment.

The market is vast and it is not always clear which smartphone to buy in order to play with the configurations set to the maximum. With our selection, you should have peace of mind for a long time.

Our selection of the best gaming smartphones in 2023

Best gaming phones in India for July 2020 | TechRadar

We like

  • Temperature control
  • The 165 Hz screen is smooth and bright
  • The design for good gameplay
  • The more powerful 65 W load
  • A large number of optional accessories
  • Two very powerful speakers

We don’t like

  • Fan not included as standard
  • Smartphone too bulky for everyday use
  • dispensable macro sensor
  • Launch price higher than the ROG Phone 5
  • The 3.5 mm jack is misplaced

The ROG Phone 6 doesn’t disappoint and even has the luxury of many improvements over the ROG Phone 5, albeit at a slightly higher price. With its powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, the boosted version of the flagship chip from 2022, you have a smartphone that will be operational for many years to come and capable of running even the most demanding games. In addition, compared to other mobile gamers, it offers unique settings for each software so that everyone can play as they want. In addition to its gaming-related features, it offers great overall performance, with an improved main photo sensor (IMX766, with 50MP), 65W fast charging and a 6.78 screen refreshed at 165Hz. There are few copies left for sale, but a 6D model with Mediatek processor has taken over.

We like

  • The powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
  • The efficient ventilation system
  • Smooth games even with high level graphics
  • Excellent autonomy
  • Thin screen edges

We don’t like

  • The screen not bright enough
  • Refresh rate limited to 120 Hz
  • Poorly translated menus
  • The perfectible photo

Launched in late 2022 in China, the Nubia RedMagic 8 Pro was the first smartphone to run on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (well before the Galaxy S23 or the OnePlus 11). It’s as if Nubia (a ZTE spin-off brand) is holding the most powerful gamer model in the world here. The rest of the equipment is equally impressive with a large 6.8-inch Amoled screen and a 6000 mAh battery with 65 W charging. For gaming sessions, this RedMagic is equipped with a fan that can reach 20,000 rpm and sensitive triggers. Its very reasonable price hides a few flaws like a lack of screen brightness or poorly translated menus, but if you’re looking for power above all, you won’t be disappointed.

We like

  • The power of its A16 bionic chip
  • Its excellent autonomy
  • Its superb screen refreshed at 120 Hz
  • Up to 1 TB of capacity (for 1979 €!)
  • The Apple Arcade service

We don’t like

  • The price goes up to 2129 € for the Max
  • The lack of really fast charging
  • The Pro’s somewhat small screen for gaming
  • Still waiting for Fortnite to return to the App store

With its long battery life and quality performance, especially in terms of power, the iPhone 14 Pro is a “classic” smartphone of choice if you like to play during long sessions. Not to mention that the screen of this mobile is among the best in the world! Finally, there’s iOS and its much larger gaming market than Android. The only downside to this is that Fortnite is still not downloadable since Epic Games’ ban. Those who find the display of the Pro (6.1 inches) a bit small for gaming, can fall back on the iPhone Pro Max and its 6.7-inch screen. But it is even more expensive!

We like

  • Designed for gaming
  • Integrated cooling system
  • Huge 6.92-inch Amoled screen
  • Refresh rate 144 Hz
  • 720 Hz sampling frequency
  • Excellent autonomy
  • Good audio experience (Dolby Atmos)
  • Customizations for the controls

We don’t like

  • Heavy and cumbersome
  • Possible overheating despite fans
  • Uneven photo quality depending on the scene
  • Fast charger 65 W against 90 W in China
  • Atypical design that may not please

Although it’s getting a bit old, this Legion Duel Phone 2 is a smartphone dedicated to gaming that’s still powerful enough with its Snapdragon 888+ to convince gamers. This competitor to the Asus ROG Phone 5 stands out thanks to its many customizations of physical controls, while offering optimal performance. We appreciate the stability of its platform despite a perceptible heating, but also some ergonomic elements like the dual haptic engine. Its main drawback is its weight, far from ideal for one-handed games, but that’s the price to pay for such quality.

We like

  • The quality-price ratio
  • The screen refreshed at 144hz and HDR 10+.
  • 720 Hz sampling frequency
  • Correct battery and 120 W charge

We don’t like

  • The dated processor even if it has nice remains
  • It is not a champion of the photograph
  • Plastic design

Succeeding the Black Shark 4, the version 5 keeps the same DNA, namely gaming-oriented features for an affordable price. Logical for a subsidiary of Xiaomi. Less powerful than its gamer competitors, the Black Shark has to make do with the Snapdragon 870 5G already present on its predecessor, but which continues to offer an honest power. Resource-intensive titles can run on it and that’s all that matters! Especially since it has physical triggers and heats up little. Its beautiful 6.67-inch Amoled screen and a fast 120W charge (a real rocket) do not spoil anything.

How to buy a cheap gaming smartphone?

In addition to the sales and occasional promotional offers on the many merchant sites, you can get a reconditioned laptop. The Back Market site, a large refurbished market, can be a recommendation. Nevertheless, you have to keep in mind that it is a marketplace. Here, smartphones are sold by third party companies. From one merchant to another, you can find a good or bad deal.

There are safer alternatives such as Recommerce or YesYes, two French companies that don’t just sell refurbished smartphones, they also refurbish them.

Note that YesYes only offers Apple and Samsung devices. A will of their part in order to follow perfectly their channel.

How to connect an Xbox controller to your smartphone?

As a preamble, let’s clarify that the Xbox 360 controllers are not Bluetooth compatible, as well as an early version of the Xbox One controllers. A diagram below to locate the version of the Xbox One controller compatible Bluetooth.

To connect your Xbox controller on iOS, nothing could be easier, if Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone, then the controller will be automatically detected when you turn it on.

On Android, it’s not much more complicated. Go to the Bluetooth settings of the device to see the controller appear under the name “Xbox Wireless Controller”. All that’s left to do is pair it up.

Remember that to put an Xbox controller in pairing mode, simply press the pairing button on the front of the controller for a few seconds.

How to play on a TV with your smartphone?

If you want to enjoy your mobile games on a TV screen, you should know that it’s definitely possible. If your TV is recent, it may be Miracast and/or AirPlay compatible. The former allows you to retrieve the audio-video stream from an Android device. The second one does the same thing, but for iPhones. And if you need to change your TV, we can’t advise you enough to take a look at the LG 48OLEDC1, a model designed for gaming, which we particularly liked.

If your TV is not compatible, there are alternatives. With an Android smartphone, the most common solution is the one offered by Google’s Chromecast. Once associated with your Wi-Fi network, this key will give you access to the Miracast option.

On iOS, the practice is similar, but through Apple equipment. Indeed, you can broadcast the screen of your iPhone via an Apple TV.

How to play Fortnite on Android and iOS?

Among the most played games lately is Fortnite but beware, it is officially unavailable on iOS due to a legal battle between Apple and Epic Games. The only way to play it on Apple mobiles is via the GeForce Now streaming service.

On Android, it’s easier but you won’t find Fortnite on the Play Store. To download it, you have to go through a dedicated site or via our download section.

How to choose your gamer smartphone in 2022?

What storage space?

The more time passes and the more ambitious the games are, requiring more resources and therefore storage. If small games rarely exceed 1 GB, it is not uncommon to see the largest easily require 4-5 GB and when you accumulate them, in addition to other applications, you can quickly come to the end of the phone’s memory.

To avoid this, it is advisable to buy a smartphone with at least 128 GB of memory, or even 256 GB, which is enough if you do not play dozens and dozens of games at once.

Be careful with some phones that do not offer memory expansion via microSD card.

How much memory?

When you think of demanding games, you think of recommended power, and in this respect, smartphones are far from lagging behind, offering performances more or less equivalent to some consoles. For this purpose, it is better to have a minimum of RAM in order to run games without too many concessions.

This is more or less the norm these days, but with at least 8GB of RAM, you should be able to enjoy many games in sufficient conditions and even more.

What is the best refreshment?

Fluidity is also important in games, something provided by the refresh rate (some may be more familiar with the term FPS / frames per second). If 60 Hz is enough to enjoy a fast action, we have more comfort with 120 Hz and more, rates that are now part of smartphones of the moment.

What screen size?

It may sound silly, but the bigger a smartphone screen is, the more comfortable it is to play on. With 6 inches, comfort is assured, even if today 6.7-inch screens are increasingly the norm, especially for gamer mobiles.

Which processor?

A name is enough to reassure players when buying a phone: Snapdragon. It usually equips the best smartphones, especially from the Snapdragon 888. Apple’s iPhone processors are also good values, often more powerful. We are also witnessing a rise in power of Mediatek.

What games?

Naturally, the choice of your laptop should also take into account the games you want to play, so it is necessary to check in advance whether this or that smartphone is capable of doing justice to the biggest games of the moment.

Besides Fortnite and Genshin Impact mentioned earlier, there are Call of Duty Mobile, PUBG Mobile, Among Us, etc. Fortunately, not all of them require powerful machines, especially Among Us, which should, in principle, run on the majority of smartphones of recent years.
